TASK 5

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lx308jBario

Script:

Welcome back to med ed in this education vlog I will be talking about how Big John @ Breakfasts impact and effect on the audience, How BJ@B represents individuals and the audience, Legal and ethical issues such as performing rights, copyright, royalties and PRS And role of regulatory bodies.

Big John at breakfast main audience consists of female aged between 25 and 45. The advertisements on big john at breakfast and the topics spoken have an impact on the audience as it makes them want to have a certain body image and encourage people to spend money on the products advertised. 14:31

Passive Audience Theory is the idea that the media injects ideas and views directly into the brains of the audience like a hypodermic needle, therefore, controlling the way that people think and behave. 15:29 (opinions)

Active Audience Theory is the idea that the audience have an active role to play in the understanding of, and creation, of meaning within a media text.

Hallam FM uses a two-step flow, this is where big john pays close attention to the mass media and its messages and then interprets them in addition to the actual media content. 7:25

Basic stereotypes and representations used by big john at breakfast are used for the Hallam FM logo because the logo is pink which is stereotyped to be a feminine colour and Hallam FM have more female listeners than men, the negative stereotypes presented on the show are targeted at men, as they are the minority. 3:39

The show reinforces age stereotypes with adverts and topics spoke. 0:06
For example, the show has adverts for young adults, which warn against drinking too much alcohol. 0:40
The show reinforces gender stereotypes by speaking about topics such as what women buy men at Christmas and what men lie about at Christmas time. 3:39
The car dealership advert reinforces gender stereotypes as a man is talking rather than a woman. 1:10

According to Tessa Perkins, 1979 Stereotypes are not always negative, this is quite true of Hallam FM’s Big John at breakfast as they don’t necessarily promote any negative stereotypes, however the topic in which Big John and his crew portray men as liars is negative and reinforced dominant ideologies.

Continuing to reinforce dominant ideologies (overarching ideas) about men and women? Laura Mulvey (1975) suggested that women are objectified in media text, this is true as big john and the other men on the show talk about women and how they should look, the advertisements on the station reinforce this. 16:24

Big john at breakfast has to have licenses for the content they put out on the radio; they have a license with PRS (Performing Right Society) who are a company who deal with representing the rights of over 100,000 members in the UK. They license organisations to play, perform or make available copyright music on behalf of their members and those of overseas societies, distributing the royalties to them fairly and efficiently. They promote and protect the value of copyright.

Big John at breakfast would not be allowed to play all of the latest music without the PRS license and if they did they would be breaching copyright, which could lead to Hallam FM being sued and prosecuted, for example because BJ@B has the rights to play the tracks in the charts they are able to play songs by artists such as Avicii. 3:30

RAJAR (Radio Joint Audience Research) is used to collate listenership and audience data.

OFCOM (Office of Communications) and the ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) regulate radio and TV content. Both are government approved, independent regulators for the UK communications industries. OFCOM has rules regarding what can and cannot be spoken about because it could cause offence to the audience: 1. Violence - This topic is not to be talked about depending on the severity of the topic, the audience wouldn't want to hear about violence. The clip doesn't have any talking of violence, Big John and co-hosts are talking about positive, non-violent issues. 2. Sex - This can be seen as bad to be talked about on the radio unless its informative. This topic isn't talked about by anyone on the clip, talking about someones appearance doesn't count as sexual conduct as they do in the clip, there are no examples in the clip that show them breaking this rule. 3. vulgarity - Swearing and verbal abuse is something no radio show should ever do, because it can have a very negative effect on the radio station and the presenters themselves, reducing viewership ect. this is why radio stations abide by this rule and there are no examples from the clip that show Big John and the others using vulgar terms or words.

TASK 4

The target demographic age of Hallam FM’s audience is 25 – 45, so it is important that the station is advertised in places where these ages will be likely to go.
Big John at breakfast use traditional advertising methods such as having printed ads in newspapers and magazines, for example in the magazines created by the conglomerate Bauer Media, who own Hallam FM.

Hallam FM have sponsored stands at both football stadiums, Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United. Hallam FM also sponsor Ponds Forge which is very well known leisure center.
Many top names in various fields such as beauty products and theme parks are in sponsorship deals with  which allow the Hallam FM audience to win competitions, and prizes or earn discounts. This advertises the radio station and the show.
Various websites advertise Hallam FM, such as YouTube and Facebook.

The Big john at breakfast morning show is distributed via the radio, smartphones and The internet, this is a great way for BJ@B to widen its audience and have more people listening in on all of its outgoing content. BJ@B being one of Hallam FM's most successful shows is accessed all over the South Yorkshire area but not just by the radio, they have the ability to access the show on their smartphones and the internet which is extremely useful for people who want to listen in on the show who aren't in reach of a radio.

Big John at Breakfast is distributed via DAB digital radio unlike some radio shows who are still using the analogue AM and FM radio this means that the radio station is being broadcasted over a single wavelength and that it will only allow a single channel per wavelength. Most Digital radio stations are distributed via Multiplexing, this is the most modern way to access digital radio. Multiplexing is effective and efficient for radio stations to distribute their content because unlike Analogue radio stations, DAB radio is broadcasted by computer code which is called binary, this can be compressed to very small sizes allowing more than 1 radio station to broadcast in 1 spectrum. When multiple programmes are squeezed into a single spectrum it is known as Multiplexing and not only is it easier to broadcast but it also gives the listener more choice of the radio stations they listen to.

Susan lives the lush life and wants to keep it that way, her job means so much to her and if she doesn't get her daily dose of BJ@B she might be able to make it throughout the day.

TASK 2

The clip used for referencing was from the BJ@B on the 2nd of December.

Big john at breakfast is a morning breakfast show on Hallam FM, they are there to entertain the public and to provide useful information as well as gossip to provide an entertaining show to keep people happy and smiling at the beginning of their day.

The purpose of big john at breakfast is to entertain the listener as they get up in the morning or on the way to work and keep them occupied for the day ahed. Big john at breakfast play adult contemporary music which is usually comprised of chart hits an pop music.

The Jingle at the beginning of the Big John at breakfasts radio show is a representation of a great morning and an upbeat theme to get you ready for the day ahed. This fits as the show is about all of the latest gossip and playing top upbeat tracks to motivate the listener for the day.

The show consists of 3 people two co-hosts who are opposite sex and Big John who is the main host, the reason behind having members of the opposite sex on the show is to let other members of that gender get an insight into what the opposite gender is saying and what opinions differ from theirs. This sense of diversity is interesting and therefore the show can pull audience members of both genders, even if Hallam FM’s profile suggests their is a greater amount of female consumers than male.

The members of the Breakfast show cover important news/gossip when the tunes are not being played, they broadcast some of the latest news and discuss that particular topic in a comedic fashion as to entertain the consumers of the show. They may then play a few songs as to give the listener a break from the discussion and follow this cycle as to keep the listener in constant grasp of the show, which usually results in gaining more and more consumers.

The  show also hosts interviews with top celebrities/music artists who come in to talk about their new album or just for a chat, This is another great way to attract attention from other consumers and even the press who listen in to hear what the celebrity has to say.

The show hosts contests to allow multiple interactions with the audience, these can vary from winning money for charity or Big John paying for your bills, this is a great factor for the show because not only do you get a lot of entries for this, people at home or on there way to work,  who do not enter or participate will still listen for the conclusions and try to guess the answer for themselves, again this is a great way to pull in listeners and keep them in the buzz of the show.

To quickly summaries the Big John at Breakfast show, the show is hosted by people who have a good humour and the same musical taste as the consumers which is a good quality to have as it forms as nice bond with the listener and makes the consumer feel like he or she is in on the gossip. not only that but they are working class people which are most of Hallam FMs listeners, this is key because this makes the consumers feel like they can relate to any views or opinions given out by big john or one of the co-hosts. Another good quality about BJ@B is the fact you are able to call into the show which gives the listeners interaction with the show which generates more people listening in on the show.

TASK 1

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cjdNd6LipM

script:

Hi. In this video, BME will give you an overview of Conglomerates vs. Independent Companies, and how the system of ownership works, and what it means for companies regarding how they operate and what they produce. First, we’ll run through some frequent terminology that’ll be used in this video.

Product/Production/Produce:
The process of creating media content. For what we’re going to cover in this particular vlog, a radio show will be the example.

Distribute/Distribution:
The act of getting the product to an audience. Our Radio show example could be distributed by radio, whether it’d be in the car, on your kitchen table-top or on a website stream. Which brings us to the next one. Simulcast.

This is the convergence of Simultaneous and broadcast. This is when the product is broadcast amongst different platforms. Podcasts Are recorded pieces of radio. They’re usually shows that revolve around specific subjects or are made for a purpose. The idea for a podcast is that they can be accessed after their air date seeing some aren’t broadcast live. They can be accessed through the websites of the radio station they’re attached to, or their own pages on the internet. Now we’re good and can proceed with the vlog.

Hallam FM is under ownership of Bauer Media which is a subsidiary of Bauer in their place portfolio of radio networks. The operating model that works within Hallam FM's BJ@B is extremely effective, the production team that writes the script for Big john and his co-hosts create interesting content and write about themes that would work well with Hallam FM's current demographic. Hallam FM has many other programmes that attend to the needs of the consumers. Hallam FM is the number 1 radio station in all of south yorkshire having over 386,000 people listening in one the first quater, some of Hallam FM's main competitors are - Viking (now capital) FM and Real Radio, these are both radio stations who have good consumer feedback and compete with Hallam FM for the top spot.

Within the world of the media industry, lies a system that can be compared to that of good chain, except for the whole ‘om nom nom’ aspect. Instead it’s ownership. One is owned by another, that owned by another. Etc.

Now, you’re wondering, what’s at the top of this chain then, who has this power and chain of companies. These are called Conglomerates, a institution that owns a large amount of diverse companies all in the industry of mass media, whether it’d be film, journalism, television, games or radio.
These owned companies are what we refer to as subsidiaries.

The process ‘Media Merging’ is the result of one media related company purchasing another company for controls of their intellectual resources with the intention to generate more revenue and viewership.
In this day of age, where entertainment and information is crucial to our culture, media companies have been using this fact by creating ways to efficiently reach new customers and turning profits.
If we look at revenue generated, the Walt Disney company remains the largest American conglomerate in the world. Other majors include Time Warner, Viacom, Comcast and the CBS Corporation.

Here in Europe, one of the most conglomerates is Bauer Media, a privately owned multi-nation media company situated in Germany. It is estimated that Bauer’s reach 20 in the UK is around 20 Million
people. Meaning that 1 in the 3 people are consumers of one or multiple Bauer owned products. This isn’t all surprising when Bauer own large media brands like Q and Kerrang. These names are the largest and most respective as Bauer has done well by making these brands a opportunity for a cross media platform. Both Q and Kerrang have multiple ways of distributing their content and for customers to interact with. The UK Rock/Metal based magazine Kerrang has a print magazine, extensive website with a a thriving community, radio show and a TV channel. The other magazine; Q has its own music award show, that being on the largest in the UK.

Bauer Radio, formerly known as EMAP radio are a subsidiary of Bauer Media Group. Going by the name, this group operates within the Radio Industry, owning a variety of Radio Shows with their own unique purposes and respective audiences. The Radio company is divided into two networks. Bauer Place and Bauer Passion. Place is made up of 36 local radio stations whilst Passion incorporates six national or semi-nation music stations.

The example we’ll use today is the independent local radio station Hallam FM. Situated in Sheffield, it broadcasts to the majority of South Yorkshire. This station is owned and operated by Bauer Radio and is part of their Place network of stations.

Going strong since 1974, the station is number one for audiences in local areas like Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster, Barnsley and Chesterfield. With an audience as big as that, Hallam FM is one of the most listened to Radio Stations in all of South Yorkshire.

As is a part of the Place network, that means it operates to serve as a locally oriented radio station, featuring adult contemporary music. The station prides itself on believing that they’re success is due to giving the audience what they want, when they want.

They’re success is also thanks to their Gold award winning show, Big John at Breakfast. As the title and award suggests, the show is the most successful out of all shows that broadcast specifically for the breakfast time frame.

Upon arrival in Sheffield, it’d be tricky to avoid Hallam FM, as it is one of Sheffield’s largest shows, banners and advertisements can be seen on many of the iconic buildings spread throughout the city. This a great example of how companies create brand awareness and contextual advertising, and really creates a sense of community between Hallam FM and their reach to the population of Sheffield. They also sponsor both football clubs Sheffield United and Wednesday.

Seeing that Bauer’s main competitors are BBC Radio and Global Media. Radio stations owned by them like BBC Radio 1 and more locally BBC Radio Sheffield and the colossal Capital FM are Hallam’s biggest competitors. Amongst other smaller competitors.
